Our newest sponsor for our round-the-world trip is my favorite musical band. You may be asking yourself, “How can a musical band possibly offer aid to adventure travelers?” A band cannot provide high performance gear or other necessities for travel, can it? However, we love to listen to music when we travel; may it be on an airplane, train, or a hotel room, we carry and listen to our vast music collection everywhere we go. Music is a part of our lives and we cannot travel without it. So, I am ecstatic to announce our newest sponsor – the Portland Cello Project. The Portland Cello Project has generously provided their music for us to listen to during our 2-year round-the-world adventure.
The Portland Cello Project is an amazing group of up to 12 cellists formed in 2007 in our home city of Portland, Oregon. What makes the Portland Cello Project unique is not only the number of cellos, but that they frequently pair with modern musical artists to create an amazing fusion of musical genres which challenges the perception of what a cello can do.
My love of the cello is one of the reasons that I initially started listening to the Portland Cello Project, but the Portland Cello Project has also helped me rediscover my passion for playing the cello. The beautiful sound of the cello is one of the reasons I chose to start playing in elementary school. Unfortunately, during my years of playing up through high school I did not really practice and “excelled” at being last chair in the school orchestra. I quit playing the cello when I moved off to college. After I graduated college and moved into my own apartment, my mother, in an effort to return belongings and declutter her own house gave me back the cello. The cello then made several moves with me and collected dust for years. After our daughter Sydney was born I decided to pick the cello back up and started taking lessons. During this time I discovered the Portland Cello Project, which opened up my world to the possibilities of the modern cello, as most of my experience had been classical music.
Through the Portland Cello Project, I have had the opportunity to listen to some great artists that I would not have normally listened to such as Laura Gibson, Typhoon, and Storm Large and I have also expanded my expectations for what a cello can do. We have been to multiple Portland Cello Project concerts over the years and we have enjoyed each one. Although we have seen the Portland Cello Project multiple times, I have never been bored as each show has been vastly different. I am constantly exposed to new artists and genres, but I have to admit my favorite song is an all-instrumental mix called Denmark.
If you have not had an opportunity to hear the Portland Cello Project, I highly recommend checking them out by either seeing them in concert, watching them on Youtube, or going to their website and purchasing their music. They frequently tour across the USA and you will not be disappointed in seeing one of their shows. I am looking forward to taking Portland Cello Project music with us on our round-the-world trip. Thanks again Portland Cello Project for the generous sponsorship. Hopefully we will be able to catch the Portland Cello Project in concert somewhere in the world during our round-the-world trip.
