Sydney’s Corner: KL Bird Park in Kuala Lumpur

Today we went to KL Bird Park in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This is the largest free flight bird aviary in the world. Seeing all the birds was super cool. But when I first entered the bird park it was okay. I kept on walking a little further when I saw the lovebirds. Oh they were so cute.  I can see why they call them lovebirds, because a lot of them where snuggling together or feeding each other.

When we got out of their cage we walked down a ramp and rounded a corner. Then we saw a pond with birds on the railing. I could literally just stand by the birds without them flying off. When we were done seeing them, we had two options, a path up or a path straight. We picked the path going up.

We went up a little ways and then the path evened out. We entered the next cage and saw some more birds. We passed a few cages and then got into the open space area. I saw a line and was curious to check it out. I turned out to be a place to get birds placed on your arm. It cost 10 RM, but I did it anyways. I waited about 20 minutes and chose 3 owls. The owls were super cute. I got a tiny owl and Malay eagle owl on my arm. I never knew Malay eagle owls were so soft.

After that we went on and saw some emus. After the emus, we went to the education center and saw chicks hatching in real life. It was so cute. After that we saw a bird show. We then came back to feed the emus and headed on a path going uphill. We saw eagles getting fed. The bird keepers threw dead mice at the eagles and the eagles caught the mice in midair. We then walked down a path where I found some other birds to feed. We then went home.

FACTS ABOUT BIRDS

To be considered a bird, the animal must have feathers, wings, lay eggs and are warm blooded. A bird does not need to be able to fly to be a bird. Kiwis, ostriches, emus, and penguins cannot fly. There are 2,000 different species of birds. You may think feathers just keep birds warm. Well that is wrong. Feathers also help the bird fly. Its’ hollow bones help it fly also. The hollow bones make the bird lighter.
