A short 30-minute walk from the town center of Lviv, Ukraine is the Folk Architectural Museum. This outdoor museum is a collection of really old wood folk houses and churches that have been taken from local villages in an effort to preserve them. As we wandered through the forest exploring the different buildings we came across a 200 year old wood church that had red windows. A lady motioned for us to go inside and once in we were shocked at what we saw. The red glass in the windows bathes the interior of the church in blood red light. We have seen a lot of churches, but never have we seen one like this!
Photo of the Week: Auschwitz
After visiting and photographing Auschwitz, it was hard to choose just one photo for the photo of the week. Auschwitz is not a place that can be summed up in a single photo. But the one that comes closest is from the room that housed the prosthetic limbs. Auschwitz was a place where the “strong” destroyed the “weak.” The weakest, according to the Nazis, were the old, the very young, and the handicap. These were the first to die in the gas chambers after unloading from the cattle cars, as they were deemed unfit for hard labor. Their bodies were incinerated in the ovens and all that remains are their prosthetics that were tossed aside in massive piles. A truly, chilling sight…
Photo of the Week: Young Polish Street Performer
In the two weeks we have been in Krakow, Poland we have seen numerous street musicians and performers. Most of them are very talented and it is a joy to watch them perform. We have also noticed a few really young street performers placed strategically throughout the city in high tourist areas. At first you think, “Wow, that little kid can play an instrument.” And then you realize that they can barley play and are placed there simply to make money, which we find sad.
