Transylvania, Romania is a castle lovers dream come true! During our stay in Brasov, Romania we spent much of our time exploring the castles around the Transylvania region. From the beautiful “traditional” castle of Peles, to the UNESCO World Heritage fortified churches, to fortresses high on mountain tops; we were not disappointed. The options to view castles are endless and you could easily reach burn out if you don’t pace yourself. Here are some of our favorite castles and fortified churches of Transylvania.
Peles Castle
Peles Castle is set in the Carpathian Mountains near Sinai. Construction started in 1873 and is one of the more luxurious castles that we saw.
Saxon Fortified Church of Viscri
The Saxon Fortified Church of Viscri is found in the rural village of Viscri. It as built around 1100 and is on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
Rasnov Citadel
Rasnov Citadel is located just outside of Brasov on a hill and was built around 1211.
Bran Castle
Bran Castle is set in the town of Bran and is commonly referred to as Dracula’s Castle. The castle was built in 1377.
Saxon Fortified Church of Prejmer
The fortified church of Prejmer is located just outside Brasov. It too is on the UNESCO World Heritage list and was built around 1212.
