A few nights ago we kept our daughter up way past her bedtime and went to join the 100’s of people that hang out in Piazzale Michelangelo high above the city of Florence. After suffering through the heat of the day, the cool night air with a great view of the city is the perfect way to end our day.
Photo of the Week: Prague’s Bone Church
While visiting Prague, our hosts mentioned a “Bone Church” just a one hour away by train. Intrigued, we purchased train tickets to Kutná Hora to check it out!
The Bone Church’s actual name is Sedlec ossuary, which is a small Roman Catholic church in the middle of a cemetery near the town of Kutná Hora. The ossuary is said to contain the skeletons of between 40,000 to 70,000 former living people. Not nearly as numerous as the 6-million people now residing in the Paris Catacombs, but this ossuary is a bit different. Not only did they stack the bones, but they turned them into decorations, including a huge chandelier! The place was cool, but a little odd.
Photo of the Week: Berlin Wall
Having both grown up during the Cold War, Kerri and I have always dreamt of seeing the Berlin Wall. From watching the news about bold escapes from East Berlin, to the fall of the wall in 1989, the wall has always held an awe for everyone that lived during that period. What once was a symbol of oppression, the remaining sections of the wall have now become a symbol of freedom.
During our recent stay in Berlin we got to go and see the wall first hand. To touch it and to see it as the ultimate barrier that it once was. And to do what so many people wished they could have done before 1989; to walk to the other side without being shot. Our 8-year old daughter, Sydney, only saw it as a concrete wall with lots of spray paint. I guess you just had to have lived during that time to appreciate it.
The remaining sections of the wall have been decorated by international artists. Some of the artwork is odd, others are beautiful, and like the above photo of the week, political. We hope you enjoy…

Photo of the Week: We Saw the Queen of England
At the end of our 10-day stay in London, England we thought we should do the ultimate touristy thing and see the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace. We showed up what we thought was early and found a large crowd already in place. We found a decent spot on top of the raised Victoria Memorial structure in the center of the roundabout outside Buckingham Palace and waited for the show to start.
I was snapping a couple of photos of the area when someone in the crowd screamed, “It’s the royals!” I immediately turned slightly to my left and saw a police escorted vehicle whizzing by flying the queen’s flag and with the undeniable Queen’s hat in the window. I got just one decent shot before the car turned the corner. Right after that we looked up and saw the flags on top of Buckingham Palace being lowered and then raised minus the Queen’s flag. Yes, the Queen has left the building!
